There are many reasons why weight loss plans go wrong; yet what you are not always told is that the majority of your dietary barriers are self inflicted.

From under valuing the number of calories you are ingesting to ingesting prescription drugs which may be affecting your weight, each of these obstacles can influence your facility to lose weight.

Below we have supplied 10 of the top dietary barriers which could be limiting your diet:

1.	Not enough sleep – it is advised that you sleep for no less than 8 hours per day and this is for a good reason. Don’t get enough sleep and your hormones become unstable leading to loss of energy and appetite increases.

2.	Skipping meals – whilst initially it may seem logical to miss breakfast, after all 1 meal less a day will mean less calories ingested. However, missing meals can trick your body into believing it is starving causing it to convert calories into fat. In addition avoiding breakfast means your metabolic rate will start the day slower and will get rid of less calories.

3.	Overestimating calorie burn – even though exercise is a vital part of any dietary plan, it is easy to fall into the trap of thinking ‘I have just finished a 30 minute exercise plan so I can treat myself to cake’. To experience the most out of your exercise plan you need to check the quantity of calories got rid of to those ingested.

4.	Under calculating calorie ingestion – it is easy to ignore the occasional chocolate bar here or accidentally give yourself a bigger portion there, but without detailed maintainence unwanted calories can easily creep into your diet. Try maintaining a food diary for a couple of weeks listing everything you consume and drink, on top of the calories they include. You’ll be shocked by how fast they build up.

5.	Constant stress – alongside encouraging the temptation to comfort eat, anxiety can also cause an accumulation of fat (particularly around your belly) and increase your hunger.

6.	Forgetting liquids – smoothies, soda, coffee, tea, alcohol… all are overflowing with calories that are often forgotten during dieting. For this reason, if you fancy a drink of wine with your dinner make sure to budget your calories throughout the day.

7.	Giving yourself dietary holidays – even though there is nothing wrong with treating yourself, at the weekend it is easy to fill your days with ‘exceptional’ eating and break rules you wouldn’t normally dare to in the week. Because of this it is pivotal that you don’t ignore your diet as 2 days can make a real difference to your weight loss particularly if your cravings have built up during the week.

8.	Taking prescribed drugs – many medications can cause weight gain that can be very annoying if you are suffering from a condition that makes working out hard. If you are worried your slimming pills is affecting your diet, consult a doctor who can assist you to improve your medication and offer weight loss tips.

9.	Don’t get impatient – a common mistake loads of us make is solely concentrating on the end target for instance your final dietary goal. The complication with such goals is that when the weight doesn’t begin dropping off, you get angry and want to forget about it. For this reason it is important that you make realistic goals of up to 2lbs a week so you’ll feel that you are attaining more weight loss faster.

10.	Targetting to low – your body has got a set weight for your build, so although you wish you could look like super models, getting rid of an additional 10lbs could often put your body under unnecessary strain.

If your weight loss obstacle is amongst this list above, it is still possible to attain your dietary targets healthily and without endangering your body.

The trick is to eat a balanced diet (no fewer than 1500 calories per day), to train 3 times per week for 30 minutes (preferably aerobics and strength training) and to set yourself achievable targets.

However if you are finding it hard to get rid of those additional lbs, the help of a medically tested herbal pill such as Proactol can help.

Revealed through 6 scientific studies to bind up to 28 percent of your dietary fat, suppress your appetite, decrease LDL cholesterol and increase your energy levels, Proactol can give you the supporting hand you want to overcome these obstacles and benefits from successful weight loss.

The Southbeach Diet – a look at the hottest diet on the market…

The Southbeach Diet has steadily gained popularity over the past few years as other fad diets have come and gone. Most people who watch their weight may want to choose a less drastic approach to conditioning themselves into eating right. The Southbeach Diet is not for everyone; you will have to recondition your eating habits and do without the carbs for the first fourteen (14) days. The benefit, a possible weight loss of up to 15 pounds in the first two weeks alone.

During the initial phase, you are allowed to eat as much meat, chicken, seafood, dairy products and nuts as you can handle. You can also eat plenty of salad, even though salad does contain carbs. But here is where The Southbeach Diet gets a little difficult; you will lose the ability to snack on anything containing alcohol, sugar, pasta, and rice for the first two weeks.

The Southbeach Diet was not created to deprive your body from hunger. On the contrary, you can eat plenty of meat, chicken, seafood, nuts, salad and dairy that your body wants. Your body will readjust itself to these foods as they are broken down and digested quickly. You are creating a whole new pattern for your body to work more efficiently during the digestive process. Thus, the first two-weeks most dieters will lose a lot of weight as they transform their eating habits to reach a target weight loss.

In the second phase, the Southbeach Diet reintroduces carbohydrates back into your diet that you love. Even though, they are reintroduced into your system in very small amounts. There are two kinds of carbs, carbs that do good work for your system and bad carbs that build fat in your body. You will eat less of the bad carbs and more of the good carbs. Should you keep on the same regimen you will progressively loose weight. How much weight? Well that is entirely up to you and your weight loss goals. You can expect to lose about one to two pounds a week until you are at the target point. Once you reach your goal. It’s time to move to the third phase.

Now that you have mastered the skill of eating right using the Southbeach Diet, you have learned how carbs can help improve your digestive system and make your body function more efficiently. This work also has paid big dividends as it has not only made you leaner, but it has also reduced your risk of heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

During phase three of the Southbeach Diet, you relax the diet a little bit as you continue to maintain this diet for the rest of your life. You should continue to carry forward using the lessons you learned along the way and make this diet your normal way of eating for years to come.

Low Fat Recipes – try tasty and healthy alternatives…

So you’ve made the commitment to a low fat diet. You’re doing well and losing weight at a steady rate. But that food! So bland and lifeless! If this is how you feel about low fat food, your recipe book needs a booster shot. There are plenty of tasty and healthy low fat recipes out there just waiting for you to try. With a bit of knowledge, you can even develop your own low fat recipes.

Low fat diets are great for lowering cholesterol and protecting against heart disease. As a weight loss diet too they are very effective for shedding those extra pounds. Foods that are high in fat include meats, dairy products, beans and nuts. You don’t have to stop eating those foods. Just find low fat recipes that allow you to eat less.

A low fat diet usually means that less than 30% of your daily calories are in the form of fat. There are two types of fats – saturated and unsaturated. Saturated fats are associated with high cholesterol. They are found in meat, dairy and bakery products. Try to find low fat recipes that limit saturated fats to 10% of your calories.

Unsaturated fats are healthier. They are found in oils, nuts and high fat fish like salmon. If you are making your own low fat recipes, try to replace saturated fats with unsaturated fats as much as possible.

Your low fat diet should include plenty of fruit and vegetables and grains. Fats and oils should be limited in their use. For dairy, try to choose the low fat products, and stick to lean meats, poultry and fish for your protein foods. That gives you plenty of options when following low fat recipes.

The cooking utensils you choose can make a big difference in low fat recipes. Non-stick pans will allow you to cook with just a little bit of oil for taste. When you’re baking, use paper liners for muffins so you don’t have to grease the pan. If you have a low fat recipe that calls for stir frying, use a wok. With a good quality wok you can use broth instead of oil for stir frying.

Maybe you have some favorite dishes from before your low fat days. Here are some tips for converting them into low fat recipes. If you have a recipe that uses both meat and vegetables, try increasing the vegetable portion while decreasing the meat portion. Gravies don’t need fat to be thickened. Mix a bit of flour with milk or broth and use that as an effective thickener.

There’s no need to feel deprived when following a low fat diet. The huge variety of low fat recipes ensures that you can eat well and eat healthy at the same time. Plus, it’s easy and fun to develop your own low fat recipes. Be creative in the kitchen and your body will thank you for it!

National Consumer Poll: Many Low-Carb Dieters Shun Fruit, Putting Them at Risk for Poor Nutrition

Leading Nutrition Researcher Says Nutrient Dense Fruits Like Kiwifruit Easily Fit in Healthy Reduced-Carb Dieting Plan

(Seattle, Wash.) — In a national telephone survey last week, many low-carb dieters told ACNielsen pollsters they are shunning fruit in their attempt to lose weight, even though nutritionists say fruit plays an important role in a healthy diet. Fruit consumption is encouraged during the maintenance phase of popular low-carb diets, but that message may not be getting through.

The pollsters spoke with a nationally representative sample of 1,000 adults, 12 percent of which said they were following a low-carb diet. Among those on low-carb diets, 30 percent said they had reduced their fruit consumption and 14 percent had stopped eating it altogether. That means that 44 percent of low-carb dieters – roughly 11 million Americans – may have dropped from their diets some essential nutrients commonly found in fruit.

Fortunately, there are easy strategies for enjoying fruits on a low-carb diet. The carb count of different fruits vary widely, so consumers can pick and choose to stay under their daily target. Another key strategy is selecting fruits that are among the highest in nutrient density, making the carbs you keep in your diet count for great nutrition.

For example, kiwifruit contains only a moderate amount of carbs, yet it is the highest rated popular fruit for nutrient density, meaning it packs the biggest nutrition punch.

“If your diet is low in carbohydrates, it makes sense to choose fruits and vegetables that are especially rich in essential nutrients,” said Professor Paul Lachance, Department of Food Science and Nutrition, Rutgers University. “Otherwise a reduced-carb diet can easily rob you of the well reported health benefits of eating fruits.”

As an aid to consumers, Lachance calculated the nutrient density of 33 fruits. He assessed their ability to supply recommended amounts of nine important nutrients and phytochemicals considered essential to good health by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Kiwifruit took first place among popular fruits, enhancing its appeal for low-carb dieters who love its sweet-tangy taste. Runners up in the Rutgers study were papaya, mangos and oranges. Among low-sodium, high-potassium fruits, kiwifruit, papaya and apricots out-ranked bananas and oranges.

Low Carb Foods – a look at the differences…

As you stroll through your local supermarket you will see items throughout the aisle that display a friendly conscious reminder to purchase their product because they are low carb foods. Each item is designed to entice you to purchase the item after all if the foods are truly low carb foods, then it is healthy right? What you also have to remember is that your caloric intake should not exceed the 2000 average calories a day. This amount includes carbs.

Carbs or Carbohydrates, have a direct relationship to your daily calorie count. Low carb foods mean that for every 1 gram of carbohydrates you eat are equivalent to 4 calories. Your goal for every meal is too eat food light in carbohydrates and focus more on proteins and foods that aid in the digestive process. You may think that this is easy, but you will find that most of the foods you enjoy today are heavy in carbs. Carbs do not burn up the same way that proteins and fats do. It takes more work for your body to burn up carbs. So the less carbs put in, the faster your body can work on the fat calories that are stored up.

Some people swear by the fact that low carb foods taste the same as their carb counterpart. Once you start eating foods that lack carbs or use other types of sweeteners you will see that these foods are far from being the norm. Often people complain of the unpleasant taste and blandness. Finding a food that you like will be crucial to the success of your diet.

Most low carb foods contain vegetables like broccoli, cabbage, carrots and lettuce. These foods are rich in vitamins and protein and lack the carbohydrates that slow our metabolisms down. What if you don’t like eating vegetables? You may have found yourself a dilemma that can cure both hunger and taste.

Atkins, Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig, offer low carb foods and that add a healthy choice towards your overall daily-recommended amount according to their dieting standards. There are several brand name low carb delicious chocolate bars, candies, brownies and pizzas all have no or limited amount of carbohydrates. A lot of dieters love these snacks and desserts as it breaks away from the strict dieting approach.

A stigma of restraint has been lifted off of the low carb foods because of the many choices that are available. Some people prefer certain diets such as Atkins or The South Beach Diet to help them reduce the bad carbs and introduce the good ones. Understanding which foods to avoid and which foods work towards your weight loss goals is key. Dieting today has never had so many positive alternatives to choose from.

In recent years, the concerns over carbohydrates and its effect on your daily diet prompted many weight loss professionals to reduce the dieter’s total carb intake significantly. This left many pondering which type of low carb diets are the best to choose from. Most who decide to follow this route have several popular and commercial brand name products to choose from that are synonymous with low carb diets.

So, how do you choose the right program for you? Which low carb diets have the most to offer without having to sacrifice the foods that you really love? The good new is that most of the popular diets will allow you to have what you like to eat while dieting. What most of these diets accomplish is the retraining of your digestive system by reducing the number of carbs from your meals. Your body will burn calories and fat more efficiently.

The Atkins diet is probably the most popular diet as most fast food restaurants adhere to its policies and create meals that meet the Atkins guidelines. You may often see the Atkins logo on the menu. However, most of the other low carb diets will allow you to consume some carbohydrates such as pasta, bread, and rice. Atkins is very strict in allowing you any carbohydrates. Thus, if your lifestyle leans toward a fast food paced routine, this might suit your needs well.

Weight Watchers tends to take a more subtle approach to dieting. Weight Watchers first places a numeric score on the total calories in everything you eat, including fast food. Since every dieter is different in their goal, Weight Watchers place a point scale around the necessary calories to reach the target weight loss. Thus if you weigh 150 pounds and want to drop to 100 pounds your starting total recommended points will be much higher in the beginning than at the end.

As you reach your target weight, you will learn to eat fewer calories. This approach is very successful as people can choose what food they eat. Most low carb diets, will restrict your diet in the beginning and will become more relaxed after the first two weeks pass. Weight Watchers have a legion of fans worldwide that will help you find out what your favorite fast food items are in realistic point value. You can then choose the healthiest items off the menu with the lowest point values that will help you stay under your daily points allowance.

The South Beach Diet, creates balance by first removing all the unnecessary carbs from your daily routine from day one. For two weeks your body will function without the extra calories of alcohol, bread, pasta, and rice. Upon the beginning of the second week, you can begin to introduce these foods back into your system through moderation. You will begin to notice how your body reacts to the introduction of carbs. The final phase will open the entire menu back up to you, but through the education process you have learned you can eat a well-balanced meal without the urge to overeat.

The ultimate goal when choosing low carb diets is choosing the right plan for your lifestyle. You will learn to eat less through moderation and portion control. Following any diet is not easy it will take discipline and hard work. Creating a consistent eating pattern will also help to reduce your hunger between meals. You will eventually realize, that your body does not need all of the extra calories put into it everyday to function properly.

Low Carb Diet – the benefits can be substantial…

Wherever you may turn you will find a product that promptly displays an association with a low carb diet. You may see the familiar logos or a spokesperson in a magazine and on the menus at the fast food chains all looking for you to eat their product because it conforms to a low carb diet.

But what good will a low carb diet do for me? The fact of the matter is more and more people are obese due to overeating. You are usually asked at most fast food chains to “upsize” or “super size” your beverage or fries. The fact of the matter is that carbohydrates in fries will take longer for your body to burn than say a piece of steak, chicken or seafood. You may think that this is hard to believe but meat is considered a protein and the way your body breaks down that food is completely different than the way it will break down the fries.

Most people think that a diet in general requires discipline and eating tasteless foods to achieve supermodel status. What is true is that you can have a low carb diet and eat what you like, within limits of course. A diet that has reduced carbohydrates will help your body metabolize faster to burn up those important calories needed to burn stored fat.

There are various low carb diets where you can achieve good results quickly. Depending on how much weight you would want to lose should be a factor. There are diets that will put your body in ketosis quicker, which is a state of burning fat so that you can shed unnecessary pounds of fat. Granted the process will not seem this easy, but if you stick to the overall guidelines of the diet you will see nice results within a short period of time.

Programs such as Atkins and The South Beach Diet have quick weight loss because your body is trained to burn fat quicker by reducing the amount of carbs in your meal. Both will allow you to consume meat, chicken and seafood, within reason while slimming down up to 15 pounds in two weeks. However, results may vary depending on which one of the low carb diets you choose.

Weight Watchers boasts you will lose weight over time without giving up the foods you love. Their menu is wide open and consists of various foods and restaurants. Nothing is off limits on Weight Watchers, but they will assign points to each food on the menu. Thus you are allotted so many of these points a day depending on your weight. As you get closer to your desired target your daily points will decrease, thus you will learn to portion your meals accordingly. Weight Watchers have snacks that are bonus points towards your low carb diet.

Depending on which you choose your low carb diet should be just that low in carbs. How many carbs you may ask? Some dieticians say between 35 – 70 grams of carbohydrates a day. The faster you move away from carbs the quicker your body will respond to your diet.

High Cholesterol and Hypertension – a side effect of our modern lifestyle…

If you are turning to a diet to reduce your high cholesterol levels there are some excellent opportunities to do so. Many popular diets like The Mediterranean Diet have a good mix and balance of foods that are low in cholesterol. Thus reducing the levels of hypertension in your blood pressure.

The normal blood pressure rates for a typical dieter can range from 120/80. Dieter’s who have a high cholesterol number can suffer from hypertension. Hypertension is considered the “silent killer” and is commonly referred to as heart disease. Ultimately if left untreated the person may suffer a heart attack. People that have high cholesterol levels are victims waiting for this too happen.

You may be asking how can you reduce your high cholesterol levels? There are three very common ways to do this.

You must start out by eating right. Eating foods with high levels of saturated fats increase the high cholesterol levels in your blood stream. Reducing these in your diet can help greatly reduce your cholesterol levels.

Being heavy or overweight does not help the situation. You may want to get a lipoprotein profile and find out if you have a high cholesterol count. The results of this test yield your total cholesterol numbers. LDL is considered the bad cholesterol that blocks the flow of blood in your bloodstream. HDL is the good cholesterol that keeps the passageways open and prevents the blockage of arteries. Finally, the level of Triglycerides is measured, which is considered a fat. Some fats are better than others. There is monosaturated fat, which is the good fat, and saturated fat, which is considered the bad fat.

The rule of thumb with these test breakdown to this:

If you have less than 200 mg of Total cholesterol this is the optimum number if possible. If your total cholesterol is 200 – 240 mg it is considered moderate cholesterol levels. And 240 mg and up is high and very dangerous.

The optimum LDL cholesterol levels are less than 100-130 mg where as anything between 131mg -160mg and above is considered very high and dangerous.
This cholesterol level is making your heart work harder to pump blood throughout the body. It is blocking off the pathways too and away from your heart.

HDL cholesterol levels between 40mg or lower are considered bad, levels above 60 mg and above lower your risk of developing heart disease.

Triglycerides levels from 120 –150 are considered normal, but anything above can still be problematic. If the level is above 200 you may have to take medication to reduce the amount of Triglycerides in your blood.

High cholesterol should not be taken lightly; it will be difficult to reverse the effects form a heart attack or stroke.
